ASTA Training FAQ

Training Frequency Asked Questions

We have a large group, or we need training right away; can we have training at our company?

Yes! ASTA Training Partners offer on-site training classes at your company. Please email training@astatech.com to inquire.

Are there courses offered in other parts of the world?

Right now, the only off-site ASTA classroom training location is in the US. However, through our Training Partners, classes in other parts of the world are possible. For European clients, there is an ASTA Training Partners in the UK, or someone can travel from the U.S.

We are looking in to offering ASTA training before or after Borland Conferences around the world, to better serve the needs of the ASTA community.

We have also considered a training session in Hawaii, which would be a much easier trip for users in Australia and around the Far East.

We keep track of all inquiries and use them to plan future training dates and sites - so please email training@astatech.com if you are interested.

Are the course materials available for purchase?

We are also working on a formal ASTA manual that will be included with the ASTA product. We are also continuing to enhance the courseware, and may make it available in the future, in print or perhaps video format.

Why was the course expanded to 5 days? Did I miss anything important in the shorter class?

The course has been expanded to a full week to allow time for more and great depth of in-class exercises. The outline of material covered has changed little, but we felt that the additional time would benefit student learning. In addition we now have time to interactively build a larger example application.

What if I don't have a notebook computer to bring?

Computers will be provided, if needed. Please let us know when you register whether you will be bringing your own machine. We recommend doing so if possible, so that you gain experience using ASTA in your own computing environment.

What ASTA Servers, Databases, etc. are used in the class?

For in-class examples and exercised, we use Interbase 6.01 (or higher, or the Firebird version), and Interbase Express. We use Delphi 5 exclusively, although ASTA works on earlier versions.

The IBX is the current, updated one from the Borland CodeCentral web site; the version that came with Delphi 5 will not work. The IBX update also requires the Delphi 5 Update Pack to be installer.

We chose this toolset partly because it is freely available - there are no licensing considerations.

We will have everything you need to install.

What are the hours of the class?

The official times are 8:30 AM - 5:30 PM, with "continental" breakfast provided at 8 AM. We may break early if we get through the desired amount of materials, and/or the attendees are "burned out", especially on the last day. The material is arranged so that you will only miss the extended example section if your flight out causes you to leave early on the last day.

What about an advanced class?

In the future we may move to a multiple-course series, with introductory and advanced offerings. The current class layout covers the full range of topics, so there is something for users at all levels; in pass offerings, both beginning and advanced students have found that the material is both accessible and useful.
