ASTA Developer Details

ASTA allows you to create real Client/Server applications for the Internet. Whether you are converting an existing application or starting on a new venture, ASTA can provide you with a clear competitive advantage. Don't get stuck in the "me-too" world of traditional web applications; our demo shows you how to exceed the limited capabilities of traditional browser-based Internet applications.

Moreover, with ASTA you can implement your application once, then deploy it on a standalone PC, in a LAN, and over the Internet. We have licensing options to make all three of these deployment scenarios very affordable. Using ASTA lets you do multi-tier programming, in many ways the most flexible way to develop applications, right now.

ASTA works with the BDE and with nearly and non-BDE data access software. Your existing application can be converted to ASTA with the help of the ASTA Conversion wizard - no need to wait, you can start coding with ASTA right now - you will be ready no matter how your application need to be deployed. Your marketing
department will love it!

Unlike the web, ASTA was designed to handle database transactions and real time messaging. Simple applications work well with CGI/ISAPI & HTML, but if you have a real application performing real work, don't dumb it down for the web! Use ASTA and deliver a superior product instead!

ASTA is an easy-to-use development tool that keeps you in charge. We shield you from the complexity of sockets and network programming, allowing you to concentrate on adding value to you application instead of wasting time in the never-never land of multi-threaded, sockets-based, application server development. We have done the hard work for you. ASTA sets the ease-of use standard, it is the simplest way to create Internet-ready Client/Server programs.

The same team that made the conceptual leap from sockets programming to a serious and easy-to-use, multi-tier development tool is still the same team delivering the product to you today. ASTA is a product of original and innovative thinking -- our ideas and our code are original, the ideas were not "copied" from another company and the code was not licensed -- and the quality of our vision and work is evident in the product. That is why it is the premier choice for developers in this space.

Here are some of the reasons to use ASTA.

Ease of use

ASTA's ease of use is unmatched. We have remained faithful to the VCL - our TAstaDataSet and TAstaClientDataSet exhibit expected behavior that is consistent with the VCL. You use them in a manner similar to a TQuery. This makes them predictable and easy to use. Superior design time capabilities allow for increased productivity. In our online manual, we have a tutorial that show how easy it is to create an Internet-Ready database.

Threading

Scalability and performance under real world conditions requires threading. There is no way around that fact. When done properly, threading is good. Since threading is a relatively difficult and demanding task, ASTA relieves you of the burden. By using one of our three different threading models, you gain the performance and scalability that you need without incurring the complexity of developing your multi-threaded tasks from scratch.

Support

ASTA's support has been heralded over and over again. We strive to be responsive to developer needs. There is a philosophical difference that sets the ASTA Technology Group apart: we view ASTA developers as Partners. ASTA developers enjoy direct support or participation in a group listserver. Take a look at our online support. The ASTA mailing list is the hub of a vibrant ASTA developer community.

Server-Side Features

An ASTA Business Object manager provides you with a "smart man's" way to use distributed objects. Create objects on the server and they are available for use, at design time, on the client. A TAstaProvider enables you to customize database activity at the server. The server can even connect to Java clients. Using server-side features, you can move all of your business logic and SQL database access to the server, leaving a very "thin" client.

Additional Tools

Everyone's environment is different. ASTA provides a host of tools to help accomodate that fact. We currently offer nine different servers for whatever type of database work you do (BDE, ODBC, Direct Oracle Access, DBISAM, Interbase, etc). An AstaServiceManager allows you to manage your servers, an ASTA Query Builder (generously contributed by a licensing agreement with Gerald Nunn) allows you to manage Queries visually, and an array of tutorials get you off the ground quickly. See our additional tools page for details. We also offer links to some supporting products.

Documentation

ASTA v 2.x ships with an updated help file and a renewed commitment to our documentation effort. We offer a series of tutorials, several online tutorials, and some detailed discussions of fundamental topics. Our online Asta Manual is growing at customer request and an Up And Running guide gets you started.

Ease of Installation

ASTA clients do not require client-side configuration! No DLLs. No BDE. No Drivers.

Third-party Tools Support

ASTA supports InfoPower (and other TDataSet compliant 3rd-party tools).

Database Support

ASTA supports multiple databases; SQL Server, Oracle, Interbase, SQL Anywhere, Paradox, Access, Sybase, DB2. Custom interfaces can be written to proprietary datasources. A list of our ASTA servers is available.
